Il sostantivo hoard indica sostanzialmente una scorta, spesso nascosta, che viene attentamente conservata per il futuro, a vast hoard of treasure, un ricco gruzzolo, tesoro; come verbo hoard significa “ammassare, accumulare, ammucchiare”: People caught hoarding foodstuffs during the shortage will be fined, coloro che saranno sorpresi a fare scorte di cibo durante il razionamento saranno multati. Non bisogna confondere hoard con il sostantivo horde, che si pronuncia allo stesso modo, ma significa “orda”, ed è spesso usato in senso dispregiativo: hordes of angry football supporters, orde di tifosi arrabbiati.
